GERMAN PAVILION EXPO 2019 BEIJING CHINA

Innovations and ideas for sustainable horticultureThe concept of the German contribution at the horticultural EXPO 2019 in Beijing

At the International Horticultural Exhibition 2019 in Beijing, Germany is presenting innovative approaches, proven methods and fresh ideas in horticulture. Solutions for future-oriented urban development are also presented as an important contribution to sustainable urban development. The horticultural EXPO in the Chinese capital runs from 29 April to 7 October 2019 under the motto “Live Green, Live Better”. The responsible Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) has commissioned the EXPO-experienced Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH (HMC) to carry out the German contribution.

Pavilion and garden merge into a single unit

“Seeding the Future” – the design of the bidding consortium “BIEGE for Germany at EXPO 2019, Beijing”, consisting of Kontrapunkt Agentur für Kommunikation GmbH from Hamburg and gtp2 architekten from Düsseldorf – convinced the jury with a conclusive overall concept. Germany has a total area of 2,000 square metres at its disposal at the horticultural EXPO. The 425 square meter pavilion with a floor plan curved shape of a leaf is located in the middle of the booth. The glass walls of the pavilion visually annul the separation between the building and the garden landscape and underline the open character of the German contribution. An exhibition in the pavilion is dedicated to current aspects of the EXPO theme, such as natural raw materials as the basis of a biobased economy and trends such as urban gardening in large cities. Green facades, so-called green screens, frame the two-storey building and combine the pavilion and the garden landscape into one unit.

A journey through Germany

The circular garden landscape around the pavilion invites visitors on a round trip through Germany. On the green screens, the planting concept in front is continued vertically. The German concept is completed by a generously designed public square with restaurant, beer garden and a play area for kids.

About EXPO 2019 Beijing

The International Horticultural Exhibition 2019 in Beijing will take place from 29 April to 7 October 2019 in the Yanqing district, directly at the Great Wall of China, some 75 kilometers northwest of the city center, under the motto “Live Green, Live Better”. In the five sub-themes “Green Development”, “Horticulture in Life”, “Harmonizing with Nature”, “Education and Future” and “Home of Hearts” the horticultural EXPO deals with the increasing urbanisation worldwide and the associated effects on our ecosystem. The EXPO site covers an area of around 960 hectares and the exhibition area is around 500 hectares. The organisers expect 100 participating nations, international organisations and more than 16 million visitors.
